A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLUB CARIB
In 1966 a group of Caribbean men who regularly met, saw the need whereby the Caribbean population could come together, share common interests, and develop a harmonious relationship in the city of Oshawa. Hence Club Carib was born. Sports (cricket to be exact) and social events played a major part of bringing people together.
During the 70’s the focus shifted, and a more cultural approach was taken. In 1971 whilst preparing for the annual July 1 st parade, two cultural components were added,
1 Carnival costumes, designed by a member.
2 Oshawa Carib’s Steel Orchestra was formed.
These instruments were made in Oshawa by another member of the club, and the club members formed the musicians. In the years that followed the Hummingbird Dancers & Singers were added.
In the year of 1979 Club Carib was incorporated and was officially known as Club Carib of Oshawa Inc.
After many years of renting various halls to hold their social events and meetings. The membership felt it was time to have their own building. Fundraisers and financial pledges were made by the members, and without any financial assistance from the Government, the building now known as the Caribbean Cultural Centre was officially opened in 1993 by the then Mayor Nancy Diamond.
The Caribbean Cultural Centre is the home of the Hummingbird Dancers and the Oshawa Sounds of steel. Many cultural programs are held here. Instructions in dancing, the art of playing the steel pan and cooking classes are just to name a few.
Many community groups use the Banquet Hall to hold various events.
Many financial donations have been given to various charities such as the Alzheimer’s society of Durham, the Canadian red cross, Cancer society and Sickle Cell organizations.
Youth of Oshawa and GTA have benefitted by scholarships presented to students over the years.
Anyone is welcome to be part of this organization, you do not have to be from the Caribbean. To take a phrase from Trinidad’s national anthem (Every creed and race finds an equal place). We invite you to come join us.

WELCOME TO THE Norther Portugal Pavilion
The heartbeat of Durham Region’s Portuguese community.
Founded in 1983 by Portuguese immigrants who wanted to celebrate their Minhoto roots our Centre has grown into one of the most respectable, community-minded clubs in Ontario. Although our Centre’s name, traditions and Rancho (folk dance group) are rooted in the north (Minho, specifically) we are by no means an exclusive “northern” club. Today our members (and our committee) represent all corners of continental Portugal, Acores and Madeira. We come together to celebrate our heritage through dance and food. We hold various fundraisers throughout the year to help local causes – specifically the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre and our yearly Simcoe Hall Toy Drive.

Odesa pavilion has participated in Fiesta since its inception in 1973 when the festival was originally called “Fanfare”.
The first Miss Fanfare was from the Odesa pavilion, followed by 3 Miss Fiestas and numerous runners-up. Odesa presents the beauty of Ukrainian culture and tradition through dance, artistry and its unique cuisine. The Ukrainian people have always shown their strength and perseverance. These traits are demonstrated in the current conflict overseas, and with help from the Ukrainian community in Oshawa we hope to show everyone in Fiesta that we continue to stand strong together. Join us at the Odesa pavilion where you will see our young people dressed in authentic Ukrainian costumes perform traditional Ukrainian dances (some more than 100 hundred years old); you can taste our traditional dishes (like pyrohy/varenyky, cabbage rolls, shishkebobs) and possibly take home a memory of Ukrainian culture from one of the many vendors displaying handcrafted goods.

The Romanian Pavilion is located near the “Saints Stefan The Great and Necktarios” Romanian Orthodox Church. The Church is one of the oldest churches in Oshawa, established in 1916!
Visit our Pavilion to try one of Romania’s national dishes, Skinless Sausages-Mititei. They are little sausages made from ground meat without casings, lots of spices, grilled and served with mustard.
Interesting Facts about Skinless Sausages-Mititei
Skinless Sausages is a cultural identity dish, called either mititei or mici, meaning “little ones” in Romanian.
The legend of mititei/mici dates to the early 1900’s. The story goes that a chef from a small restaurant in the Lipscani art district of Bucharest (the Romanian capital) ran out of sausage casings. Instead of sending all his customers home unhappy and hungry, he decided to roll the minced meat up and cook them on the grill. This happy accident was a great success and is now considered the National dish in Romania!
