OFAC 50th Anniversary
Youth Culture Award

The Oshawa Folk Arts Council (OFAC) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the preservation, development, and advancement of the cultural and artistic heritage of the people of Canada, especially within the City of Oshawa, the Region of Durham, and its environs. In honour of its’ 50th anniversary, OFAC has instituted the ‘Oshawa Folk Arts Council 50th Anniversary Youth Culture Award’. This award is overseen by the Scholarship Committee of the OFAC The Oshawa Folk Arts Council invites submissions for its 50th Anniversary Youth Culture Award. This is only open to students who are members of pavilions who are active and in good standing with OFAC. We invite high school students and postsecondary students to apply.

One award will be given to a high school student, and one to a post-secondary student, with only one award given in each category.

The award will recognize students for their academic achievementscommunity involvementschool contributionspersonal interests, and, most importantly, service to their multicultural community. The award consists of two $1,000 prizes, one to a high school student and one for a post-secondary student.

There is no formal application form; however, the application package must include the following:

    • A cover letter.
    • A resume detailing school and community involvement, contributions, personal interests, and any other relevant information.
    • An essay on the topic: ” What Multiculturalism Means to Me as a Young Person.” The essay should be no more than two pages (500 words/page).
    • Any additional information the applicant wishes to provide that is relevant to the award.
    • Proof of full-time enrollment in a high school, post-secondary institution, or apprenticeship program (e.g., a student card or apprenticeship certificate).
    • Provide a pavilion member as a reference.

By applying, applicants give the Oshawa Folk Arts Council permission to print and publish parts or all their essay submissions.

Applications that are incomplete will not be considered.  All candidates will be notified of the outcome.  Please note the Scholarship Committee’s decision is final.

Awards will be presented at the OFAC Queen’s Court Ball, held in May 2025.
