A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLUB CARIB
In 1966 a group of Caribbean men who regularly met, saw the need whereby the Caribbean population could come together, share common interests, and develop a harmonious relationship in the city of Oshawa. Hence Club Carib was born. Sports (cricket to be exact) and social events played a major part of bringing people together.
During the 70’s the focus shifted, and a more cultural approach was taken. In 1971 whilst preparing for the annual July 1 st parade, two cultural components were added,
1 Carnival costumes, designed by a member.
2 Oshawa Carib’s Steel Orchestra was formed.
These instruments were made in Oshawa by another member of the club, and the club members formed the musicians. In the years that followed the Hummingbird Dancers & Singers were added.
In the year of 1979 Club Carib was incorporated and was officially known as Club Carib of Oshawa Inc.
After many years of renting various halls to hold their social events and meetings. The membership felt it was time to have their own building. Fundraisers and financial pledges were made by the members, and without any financial assistance from the Government, the building now known as the Caribbean Cultural Centre was officially opened in 1993 by the then Mayor Nancy Diamond.
The Caribbean Cultural Centre is the home of the Hummingbird Dancers and the Oshawa Sounds of steel. Many cultural programs are held here. Instructions in dancing, the art of playing the steel pan and cooking classes are just to name a few.
Many community groups use the Banquet Hall to hold various events.
Many financial donations have been given to various charities such as the Alzheimer’s society of Durham, the Canadian red cross, Cancer society and Sickle Cell organizations.
Youth of Oshawa and GTA have benefitted by scholarships presented to students over the years.
Anyone is welcome to be part of this organization, you do not have to be from the Caribbean. To take a phrase from Trinidad’s national anthem (Every creed and race finds an equal place). We invite you to come join us.
